  • Dear friends, There are few things more inspiring than the beauty of nature, and that beauty has never manifested itself so abundantly to me as in the great state of Alaska. Even with the extremely limited vision I have, I’ve been able to catch glimpses of forests, glaciers, and sunsets in my own way, and then there are the sounds of birds flying overhead, the scent of fresh mountain air, and the feeling of an open ocean breeze. Growing up, Alaska was always a place I wanted to visit, and once I did, I couldn’t wait to go back. Well, […]

  • To be touched by a stranger, to be given a second chance, to receive the gift of life, these are the so-called miracles of organ donation. In my thirty years, my life has been saved through organ donation not once, but twice, and I continually marvel at the incredible generosity of my two living organ donors. My first transplanted kidney was given by my college piano professor’s wife, and I quickly went from being too sick to even make music in my own living room to making music for millions of people around the world. It’s thanks to her selfless […]

  • I’m excited to share that on June 4th I had a successful kidney transplant at Vanderbilt Hospital. Having waited for this opportunity for the last eight months, not knowing what my future held, it feels very surreal to be on the other side of the surgery, with a new kidney and a new lease on life. I’m so grateful to have received the gift of life through organ donation for the second time, and I’m truly thankful to my kidney donor, my amazing fans, friends, and family, and the incredible team at Vanderbilt for showing so much love toward me […]

  • Seven years ago my life was saved by a kidney transplant.  It’s because of that kidney transplant that I was able to compete on American Idol, marry my wife Christina, and share my music and story with others around the world.  But a transplanted kidney can’t last forever, and as my current kidney function has declined to around 18%, I am now in need of a second kidney transplant. I have been put on the “transplant waiting list” to qualify to receive a deceased organ, but the waiting period for these organs is typically 3-5 years.  Well before that time […]

  • I have been a long time advocate of organ donation.  Ever since my kidney transplant, I’ve made a conscious effort to inspire others to become organ donors through my work with Donate Life America and many congruent organizations. Last week in Houston, the Transplant Games of America inspired me. The Transplant Games have been growing in popularity for years, and in 2014, over 5,000 transplant recipients, donors, donor families, and supporters from around the US came to witness and compete in various athletic and non-athletic sports. After having the honor of performing two songs from my upcoming album at the […]

  • A year ago today, my wife and I moved to Nashville, TN, and I can barely believe that much time has gone by.  I’m truly humbled to have had such wonderful opportunities over the last year, and I’m so thankful to you, my fans, for all the ways you’ve supported me. One of the many perks I’m enjoying living in Music City is the incredible community of songwriters here.  I’ve been blessed to write songs with some great people, and the joy of sitting down with fellow musicians to weave an idea into a new song never gets old.  One […]

  • People often ask me if certain senses of mine are heightened because I am blind.  They want to know if my hearing is extraordinarily tuned or if I have a keen sense of smell.  The answer is yes – many of my other senses (particularly touch and hearing in my case) are extra sensitive.  But people are surprised when I add that anyone, sighted or unsighted, can develop their senses to the same extent I have. Most of you would probably recognize the smell of a fire, and you would pay attention to the change in aroma and would proactively […]
